Have you met Maisie Dobbs? She is the character created by novelist Jacqueline Winspear in a series of crime novels set in London between WWI and WWII. Maisie sets up as a private investigator with a Cockney assistant named Billy Beale. Many of the problems she untangles relate to war experience – men receiving white feathers, shell shock, war injuries all come into the plots, and Maisie is a sympathetic character who uses psychological insights from her own war experience when solving mysteries.
The first book in the series is Maisie Dobbs, published in 2003, and there are now thirteen more books to enjoy. I love a good mystery novel that combines crime with history and good characterisation and these books have given me lots of reading pleasure over the last few years.
Have you read any of the Maisie Dodds books? I love to hear your favourites in a comment.
