Literary Quizzes

I love literary quizzes, so here’s one for all of you this month. Be quick and send me your answers by replying to your newsletter. Three people from those who respond before 2nd April with the correct answers will receive my Scottish series of zoom talks, ‘Four Scottish Trailblazers’, for free (or 4 other recorded talks if you have booked for the Scottish ones).

You need to identify the character from a novel:

  1. I was born in York. I go on a very long trip. I am married. I make one friend. Who am I?
  2. I have a dog named Pilot. I live in a three-storied house. I don’t like children. I have black hair and a “tawny eye”. Who am I?
  3. I love eating apples. My pet rat is named Scrabble. I love the novels of Charles Dickens and I enjoy acting. Who am I?
  4. I am sick of all the tourists in my home city. I have two children and a wife who cooks divinely. My boss comes from Naples. Who am I?
  5. I’m obsessed with fashion, but kind to neighbouring families. My first name is not given in the novel. My husband is kind and more intelligent than I am. I am a secondary character in the novel in which I appear, and was created by the greatest novelist of all time. Who am I?
  6. I am keen on body art and ride a motorbike. I enjoy chess, kickboxing and playing in a rock band. Who am I?

It is fun to seek out some really unusual titles for novels. I love So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish (Douglas Adams), The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove (Christopher Moore), The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake (Aimee Bender), There’s a Wocket in my Pocket (Dr Seuss), The Woman who Gave Birth to Rabbits (Emma Donoghue), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Stephen Chbosky) and The Aerodynamics of Pork (Patrick Gale). I haven’t read a single one of them, but the titles are so tempting.

I hope you have fun and your brains are tested. I look forward to being inundated with correct answers. Please click ‘reply’ to your newsletter and send them through, be quick and send before 2nd April for the chance to win. I’ll reveal the answers in an email I’ll send in a few days.

Sorry, but some are incorrect. And answers need to be emailed to me, not posted online.
