HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Kingsley Amis, 16 April
Amis was a fine comic novelist, and wrote more than 20 books, plus poems, literary criticism and scripts for radio and TV. I have a good friend who regularly reads Lucky Jim whenever she feels in need of a good laugh! It is one of my favourite ‘academic’ novels as it satirises the high-brow academics at a British red-brick university. I also enjoyed Take a Girl Like You and there was a nice TV version of that novel many years ago, but I don’t know any of his other books.
Kingsley Amis was the father of writer Martin Amis, and his private life was rather unusual and chaotic.
