HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Wilhelm Grimm, born 24 February 1786

“Once upon a time …”

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm were devoted brothers, sharing a study as students, sharing their books, and for most of their lives living under the same roof. Wilhelm had delicate health, so was less energetic than his brother. He loved music and was a wonderful story-teller. Both brothers became academics, researchers, lexicographers, linguists and authors and together they collected folk tales that were in danger of being lost by never having been written down. Wilhelm was the one who edited and wrote up the tales, after Jacob had found them. Their Children’s and Household Tales were first published in 1812 and rapidly went through many editions. Today those tales and the ones they added in subsequent volumes, are known around the world.

The brothers Grimm gave us Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Rose Red, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Frog Prince and Rapunzel and so many more marvellous stories.

Wilhelm Grimm died on 16 December 1859 at age 73.
