On 21 October this year, 2026, it will be 100 years since the publication of Georgette Heyer’s gorgeous novel These Old Shades, a book which has never been out of print and which has delighted millions of readers around the world. While it is not my top favourite of her works, it is a sparkling, clever and witty novel, written by a girl of 19 who had already discovered her extraordinary ability with words and the bringing to life of an historical era.
To celebrate this important literary anniversary, my friend Amanda and I have planned a special event. Acclaimed Kiwi actor Terry MacTavish will be performing A Rare Public Appearance of Miss Georgette Heyer, esteemed Heyer biographer Dr Jennifer Kloester will speak about These Old Shades, I will give a short talk on one of my absolute favourites, Devil’s Cub, and Australian novelist Jane Caro will talk about her favourite, Frederica.
Friday 20 February 2026
2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Uniting Church Hall, 7 Lord Street, Roseville, Sydney
There will be afternoon tea, a raffle with enticing prizes, and some games. Bookings are essential.
It promises to be a fun and memorable afternoon, with like-minded readers, and Amanda and I look forward to seeing you there.

I have just listened to the audiobook of These Old Shades and about to start Devils Cub. My two favourite Georgette Heyer books. I wish I could attend your event but unfortunately I will be at work. It sounds like a lovely afternoon!
