HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Edgar Allan Poe, born 19 January 1809
“I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat.”
There is a strange haunting quality to Poe’s work in poems such as Annabel Lee and The Raven and in such stories as The Gold Bug. His life is just as intriguing as any of his writing, with his odd marriage to his child bride, and then his mysterious death. Matthew Pearl (author of the gripping novel The Dante Club) has written a thriller about Poe’s last days in Baltimore, The Poe Shadow, which is a good read.
Boston now has a fabulous new statue of Poe, walking along the street with his famous raven escaping from his bag, along with manuscript pages.
Edgar Allan Poe died at age 40 on 7 October 1849.
