HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Salman Rushdie, born 19 June 1947
“What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.”
I have to admit to only quite enjoying Midnight’s Children, and so I have never been inspired to read more of Rushdie’s writings. I’d love suggestions as to which you think is his best book? I have not read the controversial The Satanic Verses, but feel strongly that no writer should be the subject of a fatwa and have to live under police protection because of what they have written. I guess it’s an example of the power of words.
I loved his small cameo role in the film Bridget Jones’s Diary. Poor Bridget makes a complete hash of it when she meets him at a literary party! Very funny!
