HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, born 19 October 1741

He wrote one of the masterpieces of 18thC literature, yet in his lifetime was regarded as extremely scandalous. His Les Liaisons Dangereuses explores the amorous intrigues of French aristocrats, who turn sex into a weapon and who are decadent and unpleasant. It is an epistolary novel, written in the form of letters.

While it upset people when first published, it is a novel which has lasted. It has also been adapted into films, plays, stage versions, operas and ballets.

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos died in September 1803, aged 61.
