W. Somerset Maugham and his Writings
A Video Talk
His pen could be acidic, his wit penetrating, and he could capture a character in a few well-chosen words. How much do you know about one of the 20th century’s most prolific and celebrated writers?
W. Somerset Maugham first achieved celebrity as a playwright, and even had four plays running at once in the West End of London. But he abandoned the theatre to concentrate on writing novels and short stories, opinion pieces, non-fiction and letters. By the time of his death in 1965, Maugham was one of the most commercially successful and gifted writers of the twentieth century.

W. Somerset Maugham was a “practitioner of precise prose” but had no illusions about his own abilities, commenting that “the greatest writers can see through a brick wall – my vision is not so penetrating.”
