Born to affluence in one of the great stately homes of England, Vita Sackville-West never really recovered from the fact that she had been born a girl and so could not inherit Knole, the house she adored. Her life was controversial and full of contradictions: She married Harold Nicolson, but eloped with Violet Keppel; she wanted to be a famous poet, but is best remembered today for creating one of the loveliest gardens in England; she was loved by men and women and had an astonishing variety of sexual partners, but she remained happily married to one man.
Susannah Fullerton depicts the creation and development of Sissinghurst’s wonderful garden and discusses the intriguing life story of Vita herself.
Early in 2019, Adrian had the opportunity to visit St Petersburg, Florida, to view a retrospective of the work of the 20th century jewellery designer Jean Schlumberger.
Inspired by nature and with his greatest patron being the American aristocrat with a green thumb; Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, this talk tells the story of Mrs Mellon’s collection, together with many other pieces by this talented jewellery designer and other notable jewellers and jewellery houses from around the world.
We not only see many of the Mellon jewels and decorative items but also hear stories about one of the heirs to the Listerine fortune, who also happened to marry the heir to the Mellon banking fortune. Money, jewels, style and extravagance on an unprecedented scale are the perfect ingredients for another fascinating talk in the CircaAD repertoire.
“Somehow or other I’ll be famous, and if not famous, I’ll be notorious,” declared the young Oscar Wilde: he proved to be both! Wilde’s genius as a raconteur and coiner of epigrams made him the most quoted man in London. He translated his genius into stories, plays, poems and a novel and gained a place amongst the great Victorian writers.
Wilde once stated that he had put only his talent into his works, but had put his genius into his life.
Susannah Fullerton discusses Wilde’s extraordinary life story, his fall from fame and the creation of his great works of literature.
W. Somerset Maugham was a “practitioner of precise prose” but had no illusions about his own abilities, commenting that “the greatest writers can see through a brick wall – my vision is not so penetrating.”
