In 2019, a jumping spider mimicking a caterpillar was named in Eric Carle’s honour, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and to celebrate his 90th birthday. [1]

Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of the beloved children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, passed away on 23 May 2021, aged 91. He died peacefully at his summer studio in Northampton, Massachusetts, surrounded by family.

Carle’s most famous creation—the endlessly hungry caterpillar—has sold over 50 million copies since its publication in 1969 and has been translated into more than 66 languages. But this was just one part of a dazzling career: Carle illustrated over 70 books, most of which he also wrote, with more than 145 million copies sold worldwide.

Even in his final months, Carle remained dedicated to his craft. One of his final series included whimsical sketches marked with “50 cents”—a playful encouragement for children to value their own creativity. “Children should know they too can sell their artwork,” he said.

Carle’s genius lay in his deep understanding of a child’s world—its colours, curiosities, and emotions. His bright collage illustrations and gentle storytelling invited young readers to explore, wonder, and grow. A child at heart, he brought warmth, imagination, and reassurance to every page.

Over his lifetime, Carle received numerous awards, including the Children’s Literature Legacy Award. He also co-founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts, a testament to his lifelong passion for visual storytelling.

Eric Carle’s legacy lives on in classrooms, nurseries, and bookshelves across the globe. His stories continue to inspire generations, gently reminding us that with curiosity and courage, even a small caterpillar can become something beautiful.
