16 November 1896: Joan Lindsay is born

Joan Lindsay & Picnic at Hanging Rock

Joan Lindsay wrote Picnic at Hanging Rock in just four weeks at her home in Mulberry Hill. [1]

Joan à Beckett Weigall was born in St Kilda, Melbourne, on 16 November 1896. She would become an artist and writer, remembered above all for Picnic at Hanging Rock, one of Australia’s most enduring and enigmatic novels.

Joan studied painting at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, where her teachers included Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin. She exhibited her work and continued to paint throughout her life. In 1922 she married fellow artist Daryl Lindsay, and the couple eventually made their home at Mulberry Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. During the Depression, Joan began to take her writing more seriously.

Her first novel, Through Darkest Pondelayo (1936), was a satirical parody of travel writing. Time Without Clocks (1962), which she called an autobiographical novel, drew on the early years of her marriage. Then, at the age of 71, Joan Lindsay published the book that would make her famous. Picnic at Hanging Rock is set on Valentine’s Day in 1900, when pupils from a girls’ school visit the Rock and several disappear. Its quiet, matter-of-fact narration makes the inexplicable feel almost possible.

Joan Lindsay’s own note at the beginning leaves readers to decide whether the story is fact or fiction. She had written a final chapter explaining the girls’ fate, but it was removed before publication; the novel’s unanswered question became part of its lasting power. The school she attended was later relocated to Macedon, near Hanging Rock — a geographical echo that has prompted questions about the novel’s origins. Peter Weir’s 1975 film brought the mystery to a wider audience, but it is Lindsay’s novel, with its careful tension between order and the unknown, that continues to draw readers back to the Rock.
