2019 sees the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, so we can expect a plethora of books about the Queen who shaped and gave her name to an era.
I recently read and really enjoyed The Greedy Queen: Eating with Victoria by Annie Gray, first published last year. The book looks at what Victoria ate as a child, the banquets she enjoyed on state occasions, and what food was included in intimate family dinners. It also gives fascinating glimpses into royal kitchens and those who worked there, and into the social and culinary history of the age.
Victoria was an adventurous eater, and loved to try new things. I came away with a new appreciation of her as a result of reading this book. Though I must admit it also made me grateful not to be living in an age of pigs trotters, jellied eels, or boar’s head done in aspic jelly.
What do you think of the Victorian diet? Would you be tempted to make any of these recipes? I’d love to hear if you do. Please leave a comment.
