Susannah Fullerton, OAM FRS

Susannah Fullerton, OAM FRS, has been President of the Jane Austen Society of Australia for over 25 years. She is also Patron of the Kipling Society of Australia, a founding member of the NSW Dickens Society and of the Australian Bronte Association, and a member of the Dylan Thomas Society of Australia and of the Sydney Passengers Sherlock Holmes Society.

Susannah is Sydney’s best-known lecturer on classic novels. She lectures regularly at the Art Gallery of NSW (where her talks are always booked out months in advance), at the State Library of NSW, at conferences, schools and libraries. She is a registered speaker for ADFAS (Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society). She gives talks on famous writers and their novels, poems and plays at a great variety of places around NSW, Australia and overseas.

Her books include Jane Austen and Crime (the first ever study of crimes such as duelling, poaching, gambling, theft and even murder in the writings of Jane Austen), Brief Encounters: Literary Travellers in Australia (Picador, Australia, 2009), A Dance with Jane Austen: How a Novelist and her Characters went to the Ball (Frances Lincoln, UK, 2012), Happily Ever After: Celebrating Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (Frances Lincoln, UK, 2013) and she has written and recorded two audio CDs Finding Katherine Mansfield, the first audio CD about New Zealand’s great short story writer, and Poetry to Fill A Room, a delightful edition of Susannah reading her best loved poetry. Susannah leads popular literary tours to the UK, Europe and USA for Australians Studying Abroad. These include “Exploring the Literary Landscapes of England”, “The Road Less Travelled: A Literary Tour of the East Coast of North America”, “Southern Charms and Comforts: A Literary Tour of the Deep South of the USA”, “In Search of Literary France”, “The Nearest Thing to Paradise: A Literary Tour of the South of France”, “Literary Landmarks of Northern Italy” and “Ye Banks and Braes: a Literary Tour of Scotland”. These tours are usually booked out some years in advance.

Susannah has acted as a judge for literary awards, has published articles and reviews, organised literary events and conferences, and is often interviewed on TV and radio about literary concerns. Her training in drama has enabled her to give dramatic performances of literary works.
