A Tale of Austen Addiction

Jane & I: A Tale of Austen Addiction

“You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love … Jane Austen.”–Susannah Fullerton

When I walked into a church hall in North Sydney to attend my first meeting of the Jane Austen Society of Australia, I never dreamed that this was literally the first step of the rest of my life. New friends, social contacts, and other literary societies all stemmed from that day, but I was completely unaware of the radical change that was ahead.

My lecturing career has given me enormous satisfaction, introduced me to many people, provided an income, and even earned me public recognition, but no talk ever gives me as much joy to present as a talk about Jane Austen. I could talk for hours about her life, her work, and her legacy. Jane Austen, quite simply, altered the course of my life!

2017 was the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s early death. I chose this year to release a memoir of my reading life. In this little volume, I reflect on how books shaped me from early childhood into the person I am today.

2025 is the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, providing an even greater reason to celebrate than the last occasion seven years ago.

My memoir is available for purchase from my bookshop.

This charming memoir shows how a love of Jane Austen’s novels developed into a passionate addiction. Susannah Fullerton tells her own remarkable story with wit, elegance and passion.”
