HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Pearl S. Buck, born 26 June 1892
“I don’t wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work.”
I first read The Good Earth as a teenager and loved it then. I never forgot the scene when the Chinese wife has her baby. She leaves work in the fields to go inside and deliver her own baby, then she wraps up the child and heads back out to the fields, stopping to feed the baby every now and then. I also learned a lot about China from the novel.
Pearl S. Buck lived much of her life in China and most of her novels are set there. She died from lung cancer in 1973. I must read some more of her books – any recommendations? Tell me in the comment area below.
26 June is also the birthday of English novelist Laurie Lee, best known for his delightful Cider with Rosie. That’s well worth reading!
