HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Richard Scarry, born 5 June 1919
“I’m not interested in creating a book that is read once and then placed on the shelf and forgotten.”
Richard Scarry was a popular American author and illustrator. He was born in Boston, went to business college, but then made the decision to study art. After WWII he worked for various magazines, then in 1949 he had a breakthrough with Little Golden Books. After that he never looked back.
His books have become classics for children. He published over 300 books and created Busytown, with anthropomorphic animals all doing a variety of things. He was incredibly skilled at giving human characteristics to a huge variety of animals. My kids loved the Scarry books, and especially enjoyed looking for Lowly the Worm on each page.
Richard Scarry died on 30 April 1994 (aged 74).
