Meet Mr Wickham

Adrian Lukis & Susannah Fullerton

The girls of Meryton would be green with envy! I had the pleasure of enjoying a heart-to-heart with actor Adrian Lukis, better known to many people as Mr Wickham, and I will share it with you.

In 1995 actor Adrian Lukis played the role of George Wickham in the acclaimed BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. Handsome and debonair, insincere and untrustworthy, his Wickham was a memorable part of that wonderful production. Who can forget his feigned modesty as he tells Elizabeth how Darcy has mistreated him? Or his elopement with bouncy Lydia Bennet?

Now, Adrian has revisited the character and Jane Austen’s charming rogue has returned. ‘Being Mr Wickham’ is Adrian’s one-man stage show, showing George Wickham, on the eve of his sixtieth birthday, lifting the sheets on what exactly happened thirty years on from where we left him. This is Mr Wickham setting the record straight!

In 2019 Adrian planned to come to Australia. Sadly, due to illness, that visit did not take place, but now he has agreed to be interviewed. Do join me in conversation with him in this special online event, via Zoom. There will be the opportunity for some questions via the chatroom following our conversation.

Discover how Adrian secured the part that became one of his career highlights. Find out his favourite moments of the series and what it was like working with Colin Firth (sigh!). Learn what impact the role had on Adrian’s career, and hear all about his exciting one-man show and what inspired him to revisit the character and take on George Wickham thirty years after.

I am looking forward to the talk. But wonder if it will be recorded to be able to watch at a later time (such as with up to a 24 hour window). I am thinking about the time difference between Australia and Minnesota!

    • Susannah Fullerton

Yes, it is being recorded and I can send it to you the next day. Anyone else in the USA can get a ticket and also receive the link.

I wish, I wish this lovely event were earlier in the day. This time converts to 11:00 p.m. in California where I live, but it’s even later in Boston or New York: 2:00 AM! Still, I will tune in and try to stay awake. Sounds like a terrific conversation.

    • Susannah Fullerton

Yes, that is an awful time to be joining a zoom conversation, but do hope you can join us Jeanne.
