Henrik Ibsen
4 Scandi Trailblazers Who Changed the World
When Nora, heroine of Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House, walks out on her husband, she slams the door as she goes. It was said that the sound of that slamming door echoed around the marital homes of Europe, resulting in some very worried husbands. Ibsen’s feminism, so strongly depicted in this play, was unfortunately not carried into his private life.
Henrik Ibsen’s personal life was a turbulent one – learn more about this great dramatist and his finest play.

Henrik Ibsen, the ‘Father of Realism’, broke all the theatrical rules of his day and founded modern theatre. After Shakespeare, he is considered the second-most influential playwright of all time, and such plays as Brand, Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck and Hedda Gabler challenged audiences in Ibsen’s day and continue to do so today.

Thankyou for a wonderful talk about Henrik Ibsen, one of my favourite playwrights. You were talking about other Scandinavian trailblazers and I haven’t heard you ever mention Tove Jansson, artist and author of the Moomin books. I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Tove Jansson Work and Love” by Tuula Karjalainen. Perhaps you have read it and enjoyed it too. Tove was a true trailbrazer, writing these amazing books and illustrating them herself. She was also a friend of Astrid Lindgren.

Oh I love the Moomins and not long ago watched a fascinating documentary about Tove. An amazing woman. I was sticking to Sweden, Denmark and Norway because that was where my literary tour and I’d already done a lot of the work, but if I do a Scandi Trailblazers Part 2, I’d certianly include Tove.
Thanks for the reminder.
