A Glittery Sydney Event

A glittery Sydney event

Some months ago, I asked readers of this newsletter to suggest scenes in novels and short stories in which jewels figure prominently. This was to prepare a talk I was giving at a day celebrating the gorgeous Cartier exhibition currently on in Melbourne. I know many people have made it to Melbourne to see the glittering displays, but if you couldn’t get there, or attend the ‘Cartier’ day organised by Australians Studying Abroad, then all is not lost. Jewellery historian Adrian Dickens and I have planned a glittery Sydney event on Friday 21 August, to be held at the Uniting Church, Lord Street, Roseville, from 2pm to 4.30pm, with afternoon tea included.

I will begin with my new talk on ‘Jewels in Literature’ – from Anne of Green Gables to James Bond, Middlemarch to The Great Gatsby, jewels often play an important role in fiction – they depict character, further the plot, often bring about crime or even murder and provide motivations for all sorts of behaviours. The talk will be illustrated.

Then Adrian Dickens will tell us all about the history of Cartier and discuss some of their rare and precious creations, again with sumptuous pictures.

The cost for both talks and afternoon tea is $40, and places are limited. You can book for this special day at A Jewel of Beauty is a Joy Forever.
