L.M. Montgomery’s 150th Birthday

L.M. Montgomery 150th birthday

Has your life been enriched by reading Anne of Green Gables and its sequels, the Emily books, and the other fabulous novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery? Her works have been amongst the most beloved and influential novels of my life, and visiting Prince Edward Island remains one of my most emotional travel experiences ever. I adore Anne, Rilla, Emily, Valency, and Kilmeny, although Sara and Pat never moved me as much, and the first deep loves of my life were Gilbert Blythe, Kenneth Ford and Teddy Kent.

This is why I want to celebrate L.M. Montgomery’s 150th birthday on 30 November this year. If you too are a kindred spirit, please join me on Montgomery’s actual birthday. I’ve planned a special 2-hour celebration of her life – there will be talks, activities, guest speakers and more.

Here is the Zoom code so you can log in. No need to purchase a ticket.

I love giving talks on Montgomery’s life, travelling in her footsteps, reading critical books about her writings and biographies of her sad life, and I’d love to share my passion for the woman and her fictional world by sharing this special occasion with other Anne fans. You can pour a glass of raspberry cordial (of either the intoxicating or benign variety) and join in the fun.

This event will be recorded, so if you can’t join on the day, or the time difference doesn’t work for you, then you can still get to watch it all and celebrate this important literary anniversary at an hour that suits you.

You even have time for some glorious rereading before the birth date – open your favourite and travel again to Prince Edward Island, laugh over Anne and the amethyst brooch and the hair turned green, and feel outrage with the immortal Anne when Gilbert calls her ‘Carrots’. I plan to try some of the audio versions of the novels, as I’ve never listened to them before, just read from my very tattered and adored copies. But whichever volume you pick up, I hope you have fun rediscovering Canada’s greatest writer in preparation for our virtual party.
