HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Frances Hodgson Burnett, born 24 November 1849
“If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.”
There was probably a whole generation of little boys who cursed Frances Hodgson Burnett because their mothers dressed them just like Little Lord Fauntleroy, with velvet collars and suits, and kept their hair long. A.A. Milne was one of them – the day his mother finally let him cut off the long curls was one of the happiest of his childhood. Frances Hodgson Burnett’s influence was very great.
She was born in England, but lived much of her life in America. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1885, A Little Princess in 1905 and The Secret Garden in 1911. All were extremely popular, and she also tried her hand at writing plays. She was a very prolific writer.
Today there is a statue in her honour in Central Park, New York, featuring two of her characters from The Secret Garden.
Frances Hodgson Burnett died on 29 October 1924, aged 74.
