His pen could be acidic, his wit penetrating, and he could capture a character in a few well-chosen words. How much do you know about one of the 20th century’s most prolific and celebrated writers?
W. Somerset Maugham first achieved celebrity as a playwright, and even had four plays running at once in the West End of London. But he abandoned the theatre to concentrate on writing novels and short stories, opinion pieces, non-fiction and letters. By the time of his death in 1965 Maugham was one of the most commercially successful and gifted writers of the twentieth century.
Although not as popular as he once was, Maugham’s great works continue to stand the test of time. Discover how his unique blend of wit, keen social observation, and deeply human storytelling captivated audiences worldwide.
