Films to Look Forward To

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Some months ago I recommended the novel Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. Next year we will be able to watch a movie version of the quirky and popular novel. Reese Witherspoon’s film company is making it and Reese herself will play some part, though it has not yet been announced who will act the part of Eleanor.

Some book-based films to look forward to either later this year or next year include Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, Kipling’s The Jungle Book with Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Dr Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (with Benedict Cumberbatch doing the voice of the Grinch), P.L. Travers’s Mary Poppins Returns (with Emily Blunt), Sylvia Plath’s harrowing novel The Bell Jar (with Dakota Fanning), Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, and both a TV series and a film version of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved classic Little Women. Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution will have Ben Affleck directing and starring, and there is to be a BBC series of Bram Stoker’s Dracula written by the two men who wrote Sherlock.

Which of these books have you read and will you be seeing any of these forthcoming films? I’d love to hear if you do. Please leave a comment.

  1. Sadly A wrinkle in time was just … awful. I love that book but oprah just ruined the film. I think she was the producer but I could be wrong. I still shudder when thinking of it. Cheers sherry

I have not seen the film, but do share your frustration when a film maker mangles a beloved book. Sooo annoying!
