Henry David Thoreau quote by Susannah Fullerton

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Henry David Thoreau, born 12 July 1817

“I went to the wood because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Thoreau is rather a hero of mine. He was a man 200 years ahead of his time – atheist, conservationist, vegetarian, abolitionist and so much more! If you ever get the chance, do visit Walden Pond just outside Concord in Massachussetts. It is where Thoreau went into the woods to “live deliberately” and there is a replica there of his simple cabin, a memorial to him, and all the beauty he loved is still there because it is now protected. Walking round the pond, seeing the trees reflected in the water, thinking of Thoreau’s beautiful nature descriptions in his writings, is pure magic!

It is possible to get some of Thoreau’s writings on CD – that’s a great way to experience them.

Henry David Thoreau died on 6 May 1862, aged 44.
