Susannah’s 2019 Book of the Month club (Season 2)
Come with me on a literary journey … Together we’ll explore a fabulous selection of classic literary works.
I’ll introduce you to some of my favourite writers and literary works. You’ll learn intriguing stories about each author’s life and family, you will explore the themes and characters in one of their famous works, and you’ll have discussion questions to share with your book group or just to make you think.
Each literary guide is like hearing one of my talks, but you don’t have to travel! I hope you’ll get the feeling that I’m right there with you, sharing my love for an intriguing work and discussing it with you. You read the novel or story (but nobody will chase you up if you don’t quite manage it on time), and then you’ll receive my illustrated and info-packed Reader’s Guide. You can even discuss the work directly with me via my website. I always love a great literary conversation.
I promise that by the end of the year you’ll have a whole new appreciation of some memorable books, plus a gorgeous guide to preserve for as long as you want.

What makes it special
Anybody could sit down and read the list of books I have supplied. But it’s not so easy to learn about how the author came to write the book, or receive a commentary on all the film versions / sequels / adaptations that have resulted from it. I will help you analyse the themes, consider the various characters and their motivations, and give you links for further explorations. I guarantee that, by the end of 2019, you will have a far richer understanding of some fabulous classics than you’d ever have done just reading them on your own.
I’ve chosen very carefully to give you variety, familiar and unfamiliar, funny and tragic, gripping and nostalgic. You will read a brilliant short story and a foreign-language novel, you will dance at a Parisian ball, you’ll travel by boat, by carriage and by bike as you make your way through superb stories. Encounter dastardly villains, a repressed Prussian, young ladies who play cards to decide who should marry the new guy in town, a wild and carefree Jamaican, and sigh over possibly the finest hero ever to appear in a novel. And experience the sheer joy of really getting to know what is (in my view) the world’s greatest novel (can you guess what that treat might be?). I would feel privileged to be your personal guide through twelve amazing works of literature. Please join me for this stimulating journey.Watch the video
